I need help burning a dvd with dvd maker!!!?

i have a dell inspiron 1520. i get to the part where you click burn, but when i click it a window pops up and says, "please insert dvd into drive E and there is already one in there! i put in a DVD-R. my only guess is that i need a different kind of dvd. like DVD+R/WR or DVD-WR. PLEASE HELP!!!
