i need help. i want to become a golf professional but i wonder if i still have a chance if its not too late.i am 21 years old and play off 13 handicap, i had got to 4 five years but because of lack of funds and school comitement i have only played 55 rounds in the last 4 years.i am in Malawi (africa) and figured the only way to achieve my goal was to go and play golf in USA. so i have started working, this leaves me with only Sunday as a potential golf practise day. i will need to save for 2 more years to have enough to go golf in USA. so now i ask what my odds look like and also if there is any other way i can follow to become a future tour pro.

  1. my daughter is 15 and is a 9 handicap, and I am just hoping she gets a college scholarship to a non major school.  no delusions about playing professional golf.  she practices 3 hrs every day this summer and plays in 2 tournaments a month and has been playing serious for 2 years now.

  2. When you consider that most of the better Junior golfers in the States and Europe who are from 12 to 16 years of age play in sub par figures, it is well past your time to be a professional golfer and there is little chance to qualify for any significant event. My advice is to find another vocation and let golf be your method of relaxation. That is what most of us aspirants have done. It is what we call a "reality check ".

  3. Although 55 rounds in the last 4 years is not a lot, it should be enough to keep your handicap lower if you want to turn pro.  There are scratch golfers (0's) who are not good enough to turn pro.  You have to take into account the golf courses you play.  It is supposed to be built into the handicap system, but if you're used to playing a 6,000 yard course, playing a 7,000 yard course will most likely affect your score more than the course rating differential indicates.

If you work a lot on your game and get your handicap down to a 0-2, then you could become a golf professional, but not a tour player.  Most PGA tour players are about a +8.  Even Nationwide or Hooters Tour players are about +4.  Just look at the course rating of a 7,000 yard championship course.  It is usually about 74-75.  And you need to be capable of shooting under par in MULTIPLE rounds to finish in the money.  That's why PGA pros are so amazing.

  4. I'm really sorry to rain on your parade but I am 12 years old and shot in the mid to high 70s from the championchip tees    ( 6400 yds) every time I play. I think that you should still come to america though to find a good job and a nice environment (depending on where you chose)

  5. Follow your dreams man, if golf is something you'd like to pursue go and do it. It will be hard . It will be frustrating. It will be expensive. And it will be demanding of your time. Keep in mind that the former world #1, Greg Norman, didn't start playing until he was 17. So to say that it is impossible is implausible, but remember that this is a dream that many accomplished golfers do not achieve. And as far as practicing goes, Carlos Franco, a PGA Tour player for many years, hates to practice and does so seldomly, so for some people it may not be that big of a neccesity. I will warn you again though that it is a very tough road to go down and one that can be more troubling than rewarding. Good luck

  6. First of all, you cant even be an amateur with 13 handicap. You need to be around a 2 - 4 range. Second, if you want to be a pro you have to practice 4 times a week at least. The pros spend half their day practicing at the golf course. You are in a tough position but even if you do come to America and not be a pro, you can find a great job here and have a nice future. I hope this helps.

  7. I know a lot of poeple in this forum think they know what they are talking about but listen.  Before you even think of coming to america you need to establish a positive handicap such as +1 or 2, you need to gain some tournament experience such as south africa tour or your locally Pga run orginzation. After you cosistently start shooting 70 ,71 with an ocassional 60 in tournament's  you then should consider finding a fianancial backer. Then begin your process.  Let me say one thing to you Every Pga tournament you watch every week only shows the best players, they dont show the guy who is struglling to put food on the table. Do you think you deal with all these stresses players have on a weekly basis?

  8. Your chances of getting your game down from a 13 handicap to where it needs to be to get on the PGA tour are slim and none.
