Question:

I need help choosing a new SLR to buy!?

I'm an intermediate photographer and take pictures as a hobby. So, I wanted to buy a new SLR camera and I need help choosing. The three cameras I'm currently looking at are the Canon Rebel XTI, the Nikon D60, and the Olympus Evolt e-510. I really like the Canon Rebel XTI because the picture quality is phenomenal! But it doesn't have an image stabilizer in the body, so I'm a little worried that the lenses will cost a lot. The Olympus already has Image stabilizer in it, but the picture quality isn't as good and Olympus is fairly new with SLR's. Can someone give me some advice on which camera to choose and why it's better. Thanks!

  1. Personally I prefer the IS in the lens as opposed to the body of the camera, it works considerably better.  The IS lenses in the Canon line begin at about $280.00 ... which isn't too bad... of course once you get into the "L" series of lenses, they begin about $1,300.00.  Both Canon and Nikon lenses house the IS/VR systems for their cameras.

The Canon EF 28-135 IS lens is excellent and runs about $380.00, the Canon EF-S 55-250 IS lens is about $275.00, either lens would be a good lens to start with.

Go to http://dpreview.com and check out the cameras side by side, and read the reviews.  Then go to a real camera store, (not best buy or wal mart) and handle the different cameras.

(the Nikon D60 does not have IS In the body of the camera either)

  2. I've got my eye on the Canon Rebel XTi as well. From all the reviews I've read, it seems like the best choice. Best of luck!

  3. My father is a professional photographer and he uses all Nikon's. Good luck.
