I have a theater room with my TV at one end on the center of this extended wall (it has 4' of space behind it) and I am making a doorway, probably out of 2x2 and 1/2" drywall that I would like to be flush to the rest of the wall so it is hard to know it's there. I plan on using pop magnet latches on the open side but I am having trouble finding the right hinge or way to hinge the door on the hinge side. The goal is the have the door flush to the rest of the wall without the hinge being seen. Anyone ever done this? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Webites or direct info please and thanks!

  1. the real hinge for this job is a soss hinge.  that's the easy part.

the real detailing problem will be making the drywall float right to the edge of the opening without cracking at the 3/4 inch frame you will need.  use good metal drywall bead and lots of good flush screws, lots of shims, and lots of patience and maybe it won't crack.  so much easier to do this with wall paper or cloth, lol.  drywall mud is so brittle when you use the door all day long.

oh yeah, my favorite detail for this?  design in fry reglet reveals in a grid over the entire wall and just happen to have reveals along all sides of the invisible door.  it is easier to hide the edges of the door 1/2" back from the front edge of the wall than be totally flush.

who ever said less details and no trim was easier, was CRAZY.  good luck.  i've done this detail lots, but i hold my breath every time.
