i really want to decorate my room in a theme. i am a 16 year old girl, and my room is about 9x9' and is currently painted orange. i have white ikea furniture, and a striped blue, green, and purple bed set. i really want to put a wall mural, and i was thinking maybe a zebra theme, surfing/beach theme, or just an outdoor theme(i saw a really pretty sunflower wall mural). i need ideas without painting, or with painting, new bedspread, or same one, and i could paint the furniture also. also on a very small budget. i like bright colours, as well as the black and white look. i have tons of ideas, but i dont really know how to put them together into anything that would look nice. HELP!

  1. im going through the same thing right now.

you said you like the outdoors and zebra. well you could combine them to an african sort of thing.

as for the mural, you could paint a sunset as a focus wall and make the rest an african theme with maybe a zebra bed spread and unique african touches to  bring it all together. the furniture would be fine the way it is or you could change it. you could keep your wall the same especially with the sunset mural.

    hope this helps!

  2. Besides the painting, the biggest focus usually comes from the bedding. If you're on a budget, it doesn't mean you're limited...it means you need to shop!! That's something every girl can do, right?? I would suggest starting first at finding the bedding and working from it to build your theme. Check out potterybarn web sites...usually in small print at the bottom of the screen on the main web site...they have a kids and a teen version and both have a clearance section. If you already have a comforter, you could get a duvet set that works for you and build from there...and solids are ok. You can use throws or other accessories for pattern and flair! I recently re-did my daughter's bed from Pottery Barn by getting sheets at the department store and then getting the duvet set (shams and cover) & a set of pillowcases all from Pottery Barn's clearance section for around $40!! Yes, that's right. And, nothing matches Pottery Barn in quality.

Add some new color based on your purchase or purchase your bedding based on your existing wall color. You already have neutral furniture.

Then, just choose accessories which are YOU...choose what you like and keep within a color range of no more than 3 colors spread throughout the room....white furniture doesn't count necessarily. But, if you want major impact, count the white and choose only 2 more making black one of them. Another idea to spread your $, get a can of flat black spray paint and re-do some of your current accessories...like your lamp base. Another idea for wall art: find something sculptural/architectural and paint it black--like metal pieces at the goodwill store or cosignment shops, old ceiling tiles at garage sales, etc. One other idea when you're finishing with accessories, stand at every angle and look around. Make sure you see all 3 colors throughout the room from the view where you're standing. With a little savvy shopping, you'll have a room 'uniquely you' on a shoestring!! Happy Shopping!
