my golf game is fairly good. i shoot in the low to mid 40's and everyone i play with just blows the ball way past mine off the tee. i hit the fairway 70% of the time but i only hit it about 220 to 230. i want to at least hit it 250. i have before but on very rare accations. i dont make solid contact with the ball. are there any tips to solve my distance and accuracy problem. i have had lessons where they tell me to swing at the ball picturing a clock. but i dont no what hours to swing at like .... 6 and 3 something like that. those tips really help me. if you can get me to drive straight and far ...you'd be awesome. help please.

  1. Let me just say: Distance is important, but accuracy is key. There is no point in being able to hit the ball far if you can't keep it straight. Your driver, that is, the brand or type, could be the problem. The reason I say this is because the rest of your game seems pretty solid. Or, it could just be your muscles are not strong enough. There are tons of exercises to gain muscle in arms, hips, and legs-all things used in the swing. Make sure simple things such as having the tee high/low enough are taken care of.

  2. Lessons and practice...get the basics of swing mechanics down and you will be amazed.

  3. Take some lessons to develop power. Word of caution..... Don't get so caught up in attaining distance that you sacrifice accuracy. Shades of Scott Verplank who went into the  "tank " for a good eight years before he finally got his game back to normal.

  4. If you are hitting your irons solid and no able to generate power or accuracy with your woods it sounds like you are getting a little vertical or "steep" with your swing.  Do you hit a lot of high rights?  And Low lefts?  Well this just means you need a little more extension in the first 18-24" of your backswing and first 18-24" after you contact the ball.

In short it sounds like you are making a "V" shaped swing rather than a "U" shaped swing.  Try to keep the club low to the ground and slow going back this will help you have a wider arch to your swing and will generate more power and accuracy.

  5. Why not take some advance lessons at another Golf Course?

I changed golf courses and currently I'm at a handicap of 3.

  6. You have to get your shoulders and your hips involved in the swing. When you take the club back make sure you turn your shoulders and your hips. When you get those two things involved with the swing, the ball will go considerably farther.

  7. It sounds counter-intuitive, but many folks in your predicament will hit the ball more squarely and thus get more distance if they have a shorter shaft and a shorter, slower swing.

Try a 3/4 swing while choking down on the club an inch.  If you practice like that a bit you'll get to where you're hitting it squarely more often and you'll be surprised to see that you're getting just as much distance as you do now, or more.  After you've done that for awhile, choke down only 1/2 inch and lengthen your swing just slightly.

Also, depending on your swing speed you may need more loft on your driver.  Most amateurs will do better with a least a 10* driver.
