  1. the way i see this quote is that it is portraying the immoral act in the social world. Its a common sense that people all around the world do know for a fact that murder-an act of getting rid of one's life by force is a crime or in the context of this quote,a mistake.....therefore,this quote is actually trying to show the society that crime is not a good thing, this is since it cannot be talked about after dinner, which reflects to us all that such an indecent act is morally wrong and hated by normal human beings, thus it must be prevented.......i leave the rest to you..........

  2. Initially we are confronted with a moralistic fact - "Murder is a mistake", to which we would all generally agree. Then we are given a twist to this logic by couching it in terms of polite after-dinner conversation often attributed to upper-class English society.

The irony of this statement lies in the suggestion that the speaker may find it acceptable to murder someone, but would not do so not because it is morally wrong, but because they fear upsetting others of his ilk when conversing after a pleasant meal...

  3. Talking after dinner would involve talking to all who are around you.  You wouldn't be able to talk about a murder in front of Grandma or your little sister or the preacher for example.
