OK we have a math packet due on the first day of school and i am basically doing well, but i can't figure out this one set of questions. (don't just give me the answers, teach me to solve the problems.

Write an equation in slope-intercept form for the line that has the indicated slope, m, and contains the given point. Write answer in Standard Form.

7. m = 1 and (3,3)

8. m = -1/2 and (4,6)

9. m = 3/4 and (4, -2)

10. m = 4 and (4,3)

  1. this is based off the general equation for a straight line....y= mx +c

    where x and y are the points on the line, m represents gradientt and c is the intercept. therefore for number 7, the point 3,3 (x,y)  is on the slope with gradient one. so we just fill in the blanks. this gives

    3 = 3 + c    (y = mx + c)

    therefore c + 0

    so for any point on the line y = x

    for #8 the point is 4,6 (x,y)

    remember y = mx + c

    this gives 6 = -1/2(4) + c

    ===>       6 = -2 + c

    ===>       6 + 2 = c = 8

    ====>     y = -1/2 x + 8 for all points.

    can u do the rest now, i hope i helped

  2. Start with the general slope-intercept form of y= mx + b.

    m is always the slope, so replace m with the given slope.  Then use the given point to find b.  Finally, rewrite the equation in standard form (Ax + By = C).

    8) If m = -1/2 and the point is (4,6) then...

    y = -(1/2)x + b.  Plugging in 4 and 6 gives 6 = (-1/2)4 + b, so 6 = -2 + b, and b=8.  This means the equation is y = (-1/2)x + 8.  The standard form would be (1/2)x + y = 8.  Or you could clear the fraction and write x + 2y = 16 too if you wanted to.

  3. WOW!!!!! thats a really hard question and i need the answer to it too.....plz does anyone have it......i need it by next month....

  4. ok..so really to make a slope-intercept form equation all you need are the coordinates and a slope.

    Slope-intercept form: y=mx + b

    y and x = coordinates

    m= slope

    b= y-intercept (where the line touches the y-axis)

    OK..when you understand this part.. THE REST IS A BREEZE : )

    just start plugging in the given information to y=mx + b

    for example... #7  plug in the coordinates for x and y and you get

    (3)=m(3) + b

    then plug in the value for m and you get 3=(1)3 + b now you have

    3=3 + b

    so what must be equal to make that equation true?

    then you just take your value that you got for (b) and the value that you got for (m) and plug them into your y=mx + b form.

    Then you are DONE.

    GOOD LUCK :)

  5. Slope-intercept form is as such:

    ( y - y, ) = m( x - x, )

    y, and x, are the coordinates of a point the line travels through and m is your slope.

    Switching to standard form is done by multiplying your slope through ( x - x, ) and adding over your y, value.

    For example: #7

    y - 3 = 1*(x - 3)   <multiply by your slope

    y - 3 = x - 3    <add over the y coordinate.

    y = x

  6. the standard form is: y=mx+b

    to get this, take the given slope (say m=1)

    Therefore you have y=x+b

    to get b, plug in the values of the intercept (3,3)

    Therefore you have 3=3+b

    b is therefore 0.

    So the answer is y=x

    for the second example:

    y=-0.5x+b

    6=-0.5*4+b

    b=8

    So the answer is y=-0.5x+8

    Etc...

  7. well, in the first question, they give you the slope and the point.

    I'm guessing they want you to put it in the form y = mx + b

    now, b is where the line intersects the y axis. Since you have a point

    on the line and you have m, you can do:

    y = x + b, since m = 1.

    Now to solve for b, you know that (3, 3) is a point on the line that satisfies the equation, so you can substitute that point into your equation:

    3 = 3 + b

    This means b = 0, and your equation for the line is y = x

    Hope this helps, you can do this for the other problems now.
