new or used?

new, the yaris, accent and fit were named the best MPG for your dollars by consumer reports... in that order.

used, ford escorts from 95 on had mazda motors so were reasonably reliable and can be had for little.  the old saturn SL1 got 41 mpg and can be purchased with low miles for under 4K if you look around.  i had one run to 425K, so they'll last too.

how about a honda civic? those have great gas mileage.
