  1. http://www.bokkendowoodworks.com has some very nice ones,

they are about $40-60, but they are some of the nicest I've ever seen.

  2. We send our kids to the hardware store, tell them to get a piece of dowel that fits their hands and is a bit taller than them.  That costs about $3.  Then they wrap it in electrical tape so if it breaks, it doesn't shatter or splinter.  You can get a package of colored tape for about $4.

So, the grand total is about $7.  If it breaks, you should have enough tape to do several bo so spend another $3 on a dowel.

  3. centuryma.com has a tapered, hardwood bo staff, 4 to 6 feet lengths, for $20.  It is not the best thing out there, but it is not 'cheap' either.

  4. When in doubt....ebay it! Go to stores.ebay.com and search martial arts. Many great bos and jos. If can get a hardwood one so it won't snap like my last one but otherwise. If you are skilled in 1 go crazy with it. If you have had no training get a padded one or you are likely to break a few bones with them. (They hurt reeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaal baaaaad) good luck

  5. look for a waxwood staff.  they come in all sizes.  If you live near a Chinatown you might be able to get one there.  usually wushu place sell them as well.  They are extremely durable, light, and look like a real staff (vs a fake metallic one).  They come in thicker or thinner sizes.  A waxwood staff can run from 8.00- 12.00.

how can you tell its waxwood?  well first it looks like a piece of tree rather than some compounded piece of wood or plywood.  2ndly it will shake if you do a downward thrust and vibrate.  (kind of hard to describe).

want to see one in action?  go to youtube and type in "nangun" and watch a video.

  6. cheap

well seeing the unit price for a taiwan made red oak staff I'd like to know what your definition of cheap is.

as long as you are not doing any impact with the thing a broom handle should do you just fine.  or if you happen to come across a 6 foot shovel handle is usually Ideal.  the wood is not superb for a staff but can stand quite a bit of rough housing.

further from that you'd need to check for a good piece of descent wood and "manufacture" your own.

oak is great stuff but you'll never get a staff at the price of a store bought one.

full bamboo (not the hollow kind) is great and so is rattan wood. try to find a cheap source of wood and go from there on...

  7. Make one! You can find 6 - 8' dowel rods made from just about any good hardwood. Take the time and do a little research. You'll be much happier to show off an "authentic, one of a kind, hand made" weapon!

  8. All wrong!

Look for a Wax Wood staff.

It is very cheap... I bought one for $8 and it will outlast any oak staff you put against it.

Impact grade Hickory or Good Rattan are awesome but they can cost more than you want to pay.

    Wax Wood is the best.

Purple Heart and Rose Wood is very beautiful wood but not good for staffs.

  9. seriously........cheap and good are rarely seen together. ...go buy a broom stick if you're that broke. it'll suffice until you can get a bo.

go to karate mart, martialartsmart.com, century martial arts...etc they all sell bo's....it's just a 6 foot long pole. ...if you are in a class...ask your teacher...good chance he/she can get a discount
