  1. If you need more, go to

    http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/f...

Set the census to "1880 US". Check "Exact spelling" at the bottom.

Set census state to "California" or "Oregon". Click on "Search". Pick people whose relation to head of household is "Self", AND who has some people whose relation is "Wife", "Son", "Daughter" below. click on him, then click on "Household".

    It should look like this:

    Household:

Name  Relation Marital Status Gender Race Age Birthplace Occupation Father's Birthplace Mother's Birthplace

Joseph G. CARR   Self   M   Male   W   46   ME   Merchant   ME   ME

Eliza J. CARR   Wife   M   Female   W   31   WI   Keeping House   FRANCE   IRELAND

Mary A. CARR   Dau   S   Female   W   11   CA   Attending School   ME   WI

Daniel G. CARR   Son   S   Male   W   7   CA   Attending School   ME   WI

Clarence CROMWELL   Other   M   Male   W   28   CA   Boarder-School Teacher   VA   MD

Bertha CROMWELL   Other   M   Female   W   23   CA   Boarder-School Teacher   MI   PA

You can tell things by looking - Eliza was born of a French father and Irish mother, in Wisconsin. She is 15 years younger then he, so she is probably his second wife. Their kids are all born in Calif, so they were probably married there; that is more reasonable than the idea his train from Maine to California stopped in Wisconsin to pick up snacks and wives.

He has two boarders, so he lives in a big house. If you click on "Next Household" you can see a landlord, then a string of single miners. That gives you an idea of his neighborhood.

See what you can figure out. Play around with the different Carrs. Some will have more interesting entries than others.
