  1. Buy cheep, buy it twice.

The mountain bike that you buy for about 200 will not be brilliant.  Steel frame, perhaps alluminium if you are lucky.

Buy the machine from a reputable manufacturer - Giant, Dawes, etc.

Do not buy anything full suspension, or with disc brakes.  You are aiming for a machine that, while not doing everything, will do what it does quite well.  So, a hardtail with V brakes.  The suspension will probably be quite cheap - Suntour or RST.  Also, your gears will probaly be 21 speed.  If you can, get 24 speed, since this is easier to upgrade, but 21 is fine.

The thing that you want to ensure that the money has been spent on is the frame.  Everything else can be replaced, but the frame is the heart of the bike.

So, for about £200, try Diamondback, Dawes, Giant, Claud Butler.

You might be able to get better than the spec described, if you don't mind last years paint job.

    Try these:

    www.rutlandcycling.co.uk

    www.merlincycles.co.uk

    www.paulscycles.co.uk

    Luck

  2. well zoren, buy a cheap one and as you can afford better parts upgrade until you are happy. buy one from a second hand shop -and a helmet fro when you fall/get knocked off.

yer knapper is important to protect.

    save yer swede!

  3. Search google. I bought a very good bike from a shop called Evans Cycles. They have quite a few shops across the UK. Check them out at http://www.evanscycles.com/

  4. Don't go to Halfords. My experience is that they employ sales people not cyclists and If you don't know much about bikes they will sell you anything and you might regret it!

Go to a cycle shop or a cycle hire which sells bikes on.  You are not going to get a good bike new for £200 but the bike shop might know someone who has bought a new bike and wants to sell the old one which they have maintained.  A good hire shop will service their bikes regularly and replace any badly worn bits before they sell them on. Also they are usually run by cycling enthusiasts who know what they are talking about and genuinely want to help you get the best bike for you.

  5. go to your local small bike shop they are normally very helpful and will sell you a bike to suit your needs, halfords do some good bikes but you don't get the same service as you would with your local shop, just some grom picking his nose and just agreeing with what you got to say to make a sale. failing that look in your local freeads, good makes are marin, carrera, specialized to name a few, carrera do some nice bikes in your price range the others are top brands and you pay more for them

  6. get on to e bay and find your self a nice GT, Ii got a bargain last week,,,you will not get a decent bike new for under 200quid so id go second hand to start with,,you can always upgrade later,,good luck.

  7. With a £200 budget I would forget things like suspension and disk brakes.  The quality will be awful and the money will be better spent on other components such as the gear and shifters.

  8. eBay or craigslits

  9. carrera vulcan v spec very nice bikes and decent parts i believe most carrera's now have just as good components as my kona does  so very good value for money i would highly

recommend one let me know what you choose :-)

  10. Your best bet is to look used, but www.bikesdirect.com is also a pretty good place for a solid, upgradeable frame.

  11. just buy a cheap bike and put good parts on it

  12. try halfords they are doing deals at the moment .if your working ask your boss to buy one for you as there are deals to be had for employers . go to your nearest bike shop and explain what you want .

  13. "Which is a better bike, a Trek or a Specialized?

Or Cannondale or Orbea or Scott or Schwinn or Cervelo. We're asked "Which brand is better?" almost daily. While each brand has its diehard fans, we can't answer the question. It's not because of any political reason, but because it's not the right question to ask--you're buying a bicycle, not a brand. .."
