I have been riding for six years, but always seem to forget my diagonals. When I go up in the post; what leg of the horse should be moving forward? Thanks for your help

  1. rise and fall with the leg on the wall

so, the one closest to the rail of the arena or the 'outside'

  2. I use to have the same problem years ago but finally I fixed it.

My trainer would sometime put a little piece of tape on the horses shoulder for I could see every time it moved forward I would post up.

And I also would watch people and see how they went up with the horse and I would think in my head 1,2,1,2,1,2 every time they would go up or down.

But what you do is rise and fall with the leg on the wall, Which is the one closest to the rail of the arena or what is called the "outside".

    Hope that helped you!

  3. Rise and fall with the leg to the wall is how I have been instructed to do my diagonals and this has helped me.  I just glance down at the shoulder to the wall or the riding pen rail and rise as the leg is going forward.  Hope this helps you as it did me.

  4. You should be up when the outside leg is extended. I always look at my horses legs for 1 or 2 strides and then rise when I see inside leg forward. By the time you get up, you should be on the correct diagonal.

  5. Outside

  6. also, rise and fall with the leg on the wall...

lol thats what helped me remember

  7. the outside leg

  8. Ok, i had the same problem at first but my instructor helped me. It might sound crazy but first she made me ride bare back... so i could get the feeling of the shoulders, the i got the saddle , i rembered the way the shoulder went so it was esier for me to know when one was coming up, just rember that when the ouside leg comes forward you go up,

and she also said once you get use to it, its esier for you to just pick up on the right diagonal... hope this helped

    = D

  9. "rise and fall with the leg on the wall"

    so your outside leg.

  10. you should be going up when the outside leg rises. that way youre in sync with the outside shoulder
