Question:

I need help from experienced RUNNERS or DOCTORS? URGENT!!?

hey, I'm a 13 year old girl and I run the 400m, 800m and 1500m in track. Last year when I was 12 I ran the 400 in 1:04, the 800 in 2:34 and the 1500 in 5:14. This year I started training really early in the eason but got tonsillitis exactly two weeks before my first track meet. I didn't run for whole week while i had tonsillitis. On May 4 I started training again. I went to the track everyday and did hard workouts to try to get into the best shape possible for my track meet (which happened this weekend). I added time on all of my events and felt weak the whole track meet. I rested on sunday and today i did some 100m sprints. My legs were constantly cramping up and I could barley run 100m. What's wrong with me? Is my body still recovering from my illness?

    Talk with you Doctor; This may be normal (which I don't think it is) and maybe it's not they would know.

    It may be of great benefit to have your Thyroid and Blood sugar levels tested.

    When I was about 13 I started experiencing a lot of fatigue. I pushed my self hard. I was a cross country runner and miss it; I am flat footed so it hurts a whole bunch (I can barely walk after wards sometimes) My fastest time was 5:20 in the mile.

    In Junior High I was in the process of setting a school record (for the 440?) and my vision when (clear) in a sense I went blind I couldn't see anything at all but my vision wasn't black. All I can figure out is that I over exerted myself and temp. lost my vision.

    Our body does weird things sometimes. Many years later I found out that I have Hypothyroidism which causes me to be tired most of the time. I also used to have Hypoglycemia.

    Your cramping up because you don't have enough potassium in you body. When I used to work out I used to get allot of Charlie Horses in my legs while I was sleeping. I have found that Bananas fix this. But there again talk with your doctor; I was in my late teens and early 20's when this was happening to me.

    I have also been told that a heavy starch meal the day before your race helps you.

  2. After recovering from an illness, its important to revitalize your body. The cramps are most likely occurring from a lack of salts--drink gatorade and eat full meals, with lots of carbs and fiber. Make sure you are getting your vitamins, minerals, etc, and stretch out your muscles every night, because they are probably tight from not doing anything for a week. Loosen up, take it easy, and do some hard training only when you feel up to it; otherwise, it will only hurt you.

  3. That's probably right...and by what you've said...it sounds like you've worked yourself too hard once you got back to training.

    Right now I would say the best thing to do is maybe take a day break...and don't work yourself too hard! You need some easy days in there! :)

    If the pain persists...I would suggest seeing your school athletic trainer or doctor.
