  1. DVR is Digital Video Recorder and is thru a cable company.  And TIVO is thru satellite. And yes you will need a cable or satalite subsciption to be able for this to work as it records programming from your tv.  No you do not need both just a DVR will work.  You can set it to record just one program or a series of recordings.  E-mail me if you have any questions and i'll talk you thru it.  I used to install cable and hook up boxes.

  2. DVD recorders record tv or imput cable or satellite signals , the same way a tape VCR would with the obvious advantage of creating a simple menu for you. Some DVD recorders have copyrigth protection activated that prevent recording of some CATV or satellite programs, mainly sports events or premium channel content, this is true for the major brands like Sony but the lesser brands like funai or apex dont have this protection activated for the most part.

DVR works similar to recording to DVD except it record to a hard drive and can record hudreds of hours. some DVD recorders include hard drives and can be used as DVR except without a program guide, cable and Direct tv use the Tivo DVR system and Dish network uses a proprietary system , bot Tivo and Dish work in a very similar way where you can record by selecting what you want from a program guide.
