I'm in 8th grade track and i was running the 800 and the guy in first place was about 30 meters ahead so i started really kicking with 150 meters left and he wasn't kicking at all but when i started to pass him he started sprinting and ended up beating me by like a half a second, so would it be better if i would have stayed behind him then with like 25 meters left try to suprise him or what?

  1. no. you might be too late then. maybe you should make the beginning part of the race a little faster so you would be closer to him. then you see him the most relaxed you need to surprise him.

another way to train is maybe work on getting quicker (fast twitch muscles) and then you'll be able to beat him. do plyometrics and lift some weights.

    good luck.

  2. The best way to run the 800 is to run evenly. You can not wait and kick in the last 150 or 200.

If you run each 200 at the same pace then you will run a  much faster time.

It takes practice to learn how to run your pace, you can't go out too fast or too slow.

You can do this by practicing repeat 200s with limited rests, and also repeat 400s.

  3. no i don't think so because then he might have won by like 2 or 3 seconds. Every second counts in running, so next time, start of at a medium pace not too fast or not too slow ad then speed up when you're almost done. Next time you might beat him, but just try running a little faster. You can do it

  4. you should have stayed closer to him the whole race

  5. I am an 800m runner too. I think you should tuck in behind him for the first lap and a half. Then start your kick at a place where you feel confident enough that you will destroy him. That is probably the easiest way to win the race but if you want to run a fast time you should run even splits each lap.

  6. No, if you had waited any longer I don't think you would have caught up to him in time. He would have noticed you coming and he would have had just enought time to sprint to win because you waited too long. I think the best thing to do is run with him the entire time. Don't run ahead of him. Draft on him. He is probably a front runner and if you run on his heels the whole time on you just make him lose more energy and since you have a great kick, you can just sprint at the end and pass him. That is the best way to guarantee that you can win the race. Good Luck!
