Question:

I need help in troubleshooting an electric motor?

I have a 1.5 hp 110/220 volt motor that has recently stopped on me. The shaft still spins freely, but I am coming up with odd voltage readings. At the motor, with hot and common not attached to the motor, I'm getting 118 volts between hot and common. After I terminate the wires, I'm only getting 86 volts between hot and common. I hope it is my capacitor, but could anyone who has experienced this before lend a hand? Thanks!

  1. Is this a motor or a generator?

With no wires attached, how can you get a voltage out of a motor, if the shaft is not moving?

With power connected, it's not possible to have only 86 volts from a 220 volt line unless your wires are very hot!

you are not telling us something.
