I am trying to find a person in a census or any other record source and am having no luck. I have found his record arriving at Ellis Island and a record of his death 78 years later, but nothing in between. Any suggestions?

  1. What is important, Paul, is explicit dates to work with.  And ancestry.com or familysearch.com are not the end all/ be all.

If the person was in the US prior to 1930, he should be in the census. Records since 1930 are harder to find than before.

Again.. what is the year of arrival?

What is the year of death? I'm going to assume he would be in the social security death index, which means there is a file on that (yes, it does cost).  Marriage records are not all on ancestry.. in fact, they won't always be online.

Please try posting the NAME and other details.  You may be surprised what people can pull up. My only advice is that you may be over relying on the popular sites, and you may be expecting too much as to what is on the internet.  We can't help unless we know what and who we are looking for.

  2. Did you try alternative spellings of his name on those sites?

Sometimes I get excellent information by doing several creative Google searches - - like maybe the last name and the name of the city or county or state.

Be patient, surely there's something out there!

Again, if you'd like to post the name, Ellis Island date, and death date...  and birth date if you have it, we'd be willing to help you look.  A few sets of eyes can bring fresh new results!

  3. In the 1920 census Joe Condela 47 and Rosse or Josse 39 were living at 1324 N. 8th St. Their children were Manuel 15, Frank 20, Joe 13, Mary 9, Lina or Pena 6, Jim 4. In the same building, I think it may be an apartment was Tony Candela 23 and Lina or Pena or Ana. I think it's an L. The census taker may have misunderstood the name or the person who transcribed it from the record to the computer thought the a was an o.

In the 1930 census Manuel Candell 26 and wife Josie 21 were living at 1430 N. Nineteenth St. They had 3 children Nat or Nar 4, Jimmy 2 and Tony 7 mos.

So as you go through other records you can look for misspellings in the names

I think these people are possible matches for your family.

  4. You can post a query on rootsweb.com

It is a free Q&A forum.

Be sure to list the full name of your relative, any/all dates & places, names of spouse(s) and children, whatever you have.

  5. You could post the name here and someone could help you.

    Did you try familysearch?

    Ancestry.com?
