Ok, I just went to visit a college in chicago that I got accepted to, only to realize that I could barely breathe the horrendus smog that the city had, and almost died there. The only other college that I can go to for this fall would be my previous university that I Hated. I'd much rather get a job until january and then get into a school that I actually want to get into, while focusing on writing and singing/acting.

I want to be a TV show host or broadcaster in the future, and I'd like to get a degree in broadcast journalism, but NOT from my previous school. I am also a writer, and I want to get my foot into the entertainment business(singing, dancing, acting), so If I had a job, I could make a steady income and also find an acting coach and a voice teacher to help me.

What do you think the best course of action would be for me?

Thanks alot

  1. That's sad to hear, Amiri, you were really looking forward to going there.

I'd bear in mind that it's the middle of summer and air quality is usually at it's worst in the summer, so by the time September rolls around, it's not going to be as bad. Also, once you leave school, it's really easy to just not go back....so if you're going to take a semester off to work, make sure you stick to one semester only.

Good luck to you, regardless of what you decide to do:)

  2. Wow, this is a big decision for you to make with far-reaching implications.  Question for you, though, do you have asthma?

So, the "almost died there" was to emphasize how bad the air quality is?  Amiri, it could be that you happened to be there on a day when the ozone level was high.  I live in a city where air pollution is a big problem - probably worse than Chicago; but there are days when the air quality is better than other days.  You just have to be inside more on the bad days.  How do you feel about the school itself?

  3. Save your dramatics for the stage or your writing. Put on some kind of mask if you have to walk the streets. It did not almost kill you. Go to the one in Chicago or keep creating exuses to not have what you want.

  4. Amiri~

I agree with Janet and R_a. I would do what makes YOU happy and if going to that particular school you believe in your heart u would be happy then I say go. I understand about the air quality and all and there will have to be some sacrifices made. But in anything you do there are always some sacrifice. Good luck with everything! Remember to have fun, happy, and positive energy!

  5. All that I can say is that the air quality in Chicago is usually pretty good. If you can't handle the air in Chicago I wish you well with one of your new career's on a mountain top in Chili.

  6. you need to look at it on the basis of which college creates better graduates (that the school is known for this course...).

The other thing is that many people hate study, so you cannot rule out the other one if the school was harder in that circumstance.

in regards to the pollution level, you need to think about this seriously as you are looking at a course that requires your voice, and if there is anything that you feel may affect your throat or lungs, you need to look at your options to reduce the risk.

remember that opportunities will always present themselves, so no matter what college you go to, there will be something that will come out of it.

Have you considered going to the 'bad' college, for at least 6mths and transferring to the better college? even if you had to repeat some subjects, you would have a greater understanding of the course material.

ultimately, the choice is yours and good luck, but i think by just working you are restricting opportunities to arise (dependant on the job of course)

  7. Do whatever you think is best for you, if there's something you are really interested in and think you would be happy doing it as a career ( *a dream*) then I say don't let it pass you by, do what you have to to reach your goals, it will be worth the struggle you go through now, and if you don't, you'll regret it forever. Good luck.

  8. Looks like you are at a crossroad in your life right now, unfortunately I think that your next course of action should be decided by no other than yourself.

Avoid any haste decisions, try taking a few days to think it over. Weigh all the pros and cons of your choices and try to make the most favorable one for your future aspirations, the answer resides in you!
