I need help on historical events!!?

In what way does thinking about the historical setting of a certain story help you understand what is going on??

It gives you an idea of how brave , courageous, stupid, cowardly etc a character is.  Knowing what is going on in the era the story is being told, in terms of social issues or civil rights issues for example, will help you understand the relevance, seriousness, etc. of the story.
