  1. Two comments:

One, you can look up the meaning of "swayed" and figure out more about that word so you understand it better.  Perhaps go to www.dictionary.com and look up "sway."

And second, once you really look at it, clearly the upper figure is a riveter, representing industry, just as important to the war effort as the soldier with the gun.  Or at least that was the message.

So your job is to write your paragraph about how you would have reacted to that message.  During WWII, some stayed home (like my dad, who was ill), while others went.  Imagine yourself looking at that poster at that time.

The graphics are very strong indeed.  I love that poster!

  2. The poster shows a miner (or factory worker) and a soldier in the same pose, with a steely determination on their faces.

The poster is designed to show that industry is as much a part of the war effort as soldiering.

The poster can be found here.

I would write an essay from the point of view of each of the people that the poster was showing (or perhaps the view of their women folk).

You could say how the poster swayed opinions about young men who stayed at home doing vital work (they may have been thought cowards).
