Critically discuss the ways in which embodiment and identity are constructed within the film 8 Mile. Illustrate your discussion with reference to at least one of the concepts (eg representation, class, gender, sexuality, race/ethnicity).

I have chosen to disscuss class and race but I'm stuck!

  1. you can talk about the nature of which he lived for class: his mother n lil sis n trailor home, broke down car, his crappy job n girlfriend, friends, etc

race, discuss his race and what it meant to him to rap in a world known mostly to african americans. his struggles to stand out and in the end show that he was the best.

  2. Eminem grew up in a life primarily surrounded by people who were different from his own race.  I understand that the movie 8 Mile was somewhat biographical.  He was raised in their culture, their music, their world.  All this had a dramatic influence upon his entire life and upon his music.  It points out how the environment we are raised in influences our lives in many ways that we don't even think about.  We just exist, grow up, and live life in the only way we know how.  That's pretty much what he did and he has been very successful at it.  Simply put, the film embodied Eminem's own real life, and his identity became that which he knew most about.

    I hope this helps. :-)
