QUESTION-Why do some countries have an abundance of wealth and riches while others have remained poor for most of their history?

Background

Between approximately 1500 and 1800, the global balance of power shifted toward Europeans. Historians have taken many approaches to explaining this change. Some historians have focused on “the rise of the West,” explaining European dominance as an inevitable result of European achievements, culture, and technologies. Some historians have applied world systems theory to explain European dominance as a product of capitalism’s expansionist character. Historians generally agree that this shift did occur, and historians also agree that the shift helps explain much of today’s global political and economic realities, including the distribution of wealth and poverty around the world today. But since scholars do not agree on why the shift occurred, there are many answers to the question shown above.

  2. The Europeans have always been curious about what's out there. Many European explorers wanted to discover new lands, and ended up finding places of great wealth that they could easily steal from. (Example: The Portugese landing in the Western Hemisphere on accident, while they were looking for a direct route to Asia.) They were slightly more advanced than other civilizations at the time, so they could easily take over any regions they wanted to.

Most of the countries that are poor today never had a reason to go out and explore. Trade was unnecessary for them, because they had all the natural resources they needed, or they wanted iscolation.
