  1. It all depends on your mechanics. You have to swing your arm straight, and follow through. You have to make sure that your toss is high enough and straight enough. You also have to put arm power into it.

  2. i do an overhand serve, and what i do is i just stand on my weight on my weaker foot, my stronger leg stepped in front, and i just take one step(at the same time that i toss the ball up in the air) and once i take the step, i slap-hit the ball(always have your arm up above your hand BEFORE you toss the ball up, so your arm will always be prepared)

you can serve however you want if you don't like my technique, just remember to KEEP YOUR SERVE SIMPLE. all those jump-serves, three-steps-then-hit-the-ball serves, etc. are overrated, and you will most likely NOT succeed with those kind of serves, just simply step forward and hit the ball, and it will get over the net, or at least get really close over it.

  3. Power is necessary, but not as much as people think.  Some of the girls I work with are 16 years old and have trouble serving over hand. Then again, my 11 year old sister is half their size and has absolutely no trouble...I believe its all about consistency of form and tossing. You have to find what works for you. Granted there are the basics of how to swing your arm, and snap your wrist, but each person has their own little routine before their toss. They toss with the opposite hand, same hand they serve with, or with two hands (spin or no spin on your toss).  Get someone to work with you, have someone watch you serve, someone who has experience and knows how to serve a float, top-spin, deep, short.... They can usually pick out what you are doing wrong and teach you how to fix it.

  4. put your entire body into it, i know its hard but youll get the hang of it

  5. steps towards target and hit it with flattest surface possible

  6. This is an easy trick to add power to your serve: start with your feet.

Instead of trying to *arm* it over, use the momentum of your entire body. Even if you are a biddy 90 lbs, if you use not just your arm, but all 90 lbs., you'll send the ball flying.

    Here how...

Before you toss the ball to serve, if you are a righty, start with you left front in front of you, and most of your weight on your back foot, which will be, of course, your right foot. (Unless you are a three footed freak, in which case this technique will not work.) If you are a lefty, of course, vice-versa.

After you toss the ball, and you start to strike it, you should simultaneously push-off your back (right) foot, and "step through" your serve. If you step through your serve, you will get the momentum of your entire body behind the serve. After you contact the ball, and follow-through, you should continue with the step and finish with your right foot in front of your left. (If you are a lefty, of course, vice-versa.)

This push off of your back foot, will force your hips to rotate, which will force your shoulders to rotate, which will force your arm to pronate. It is a bio-mechanical chain reaction.

This motion is exactly how a tennis player servers, and how a baseball pitcher pitchers. Baseball players will tell you: good pitchers use their legs. Visualize a pitcher's wind-up. Basically, he is starting with his weight on his right foot, and "stepping through" the pitch. In volleyball, you do not need such an over-emphasized wind-up, but the concept is the same.

Feel free to follow-up if you have any more questions.
