Which of the following organelles sorts and modifies proteins and packages them for transport to other parts of the cell or to other cells?

A. Plasma membrane

B. Mitochondria

C. Golgi apparatus

D. Nucleus

E. Endoplasmic reticulum

  1. A. Plasma membrane - this separates the interior of the cell from the extracellular matrix outside, so it is not our answer.

    B. Mitochondria - involved in aerobic respiration and energy, so also not our answer.

    C. Golgi apparatus - sort of the bus station of the cell: proteins are made in the ER or the cytoplasm then transported to the golgi where they have some post-translational modifications and are packaged into vessicles for transport to their cellular destination, so looks good!

    D. Nucleus - where the chromosomes "live", so no.

    E. Endoplasmic reticulum - where many proteins are made, but not where they are sorted, modified, or packaged into vessicles!  This is probably the MOST COMMON WRONG ANSWER.

    So your answer is C, the Golgi.
