  1. Even without the carpet it is still going to be a chore to keep clean.

You might find that the stairs have a nice wood patina and want to bring up the shine.

You can also get strips to put just on the treads

  2. I agree that carpeting on stairs is a bad idea- and for the reason that it is difficult to clean.

After you take out the carpet and clean them well, try staining them. And you might want to put a finish on them too to keep them from showing scuffs so easily.

    Good luck!

  3. you can tile them or put wood planks down just as you would on a regular floor.  Both options need an expert to lay them and it could be expensive.

  4. Don't have highly polished wood stairs without non-slip treads. That's a snapped neck waiting to happen. If you decide to have bare wood stairs, make sure you buy non-slip treads and install them before anyone uses the staircase.

Not having non-slip treads may even be against your local building code, and if it is your insurance might not cover you if anyone gets injured. It may also turn off homebuyers, especially if your stairwell is narrow or steep or if you don't have a well-supported bannister.
