start with your favorites, and use them all in moderation: color, era of style, texture.  i found that if you trust your style sense, things automatically come together.  when you break away from your own perspective and try to fit into another's idea of what would be cool for you, that's when you run into trouble.  just write down your three favorite themes, and pick the one that seems most accessible to you; budget-wise and comfort wise because you will have to be truthful with yourself if you are going to be most comfortable with what you pick!

been there done that. what i did was find a fabric i really liked and used the colors in it for walls, carpet, ext. and use the fabric for pellows or something

anything is good as long as its not super themed like a bball court in your room.

try colors that go together [NOT THE EXACT SAME COLOR THOUGH]

Well, to choose a room theme do this, and I filled this out for myself and now I have the greatest room! :

1. What's your favorite color? Orange

2. Do you want a dark room with little light or a middle bright-lighted room or a bright room? Dark= dark fav color Middle=middle toned fav color light=light fav color..... Bright Orange

3. What pattern do you like? Polka dots

4. What is your favorite hobby? Animals

5. What would you like best? Polka dots

So, I would have an orange and polka-dot room. You also choose colors that go along with your favorite color.

it depends on what you like...my only suggestion- DO NOT PAINT YOUR ROOM DARK COLORS. it makes you sad and it looks really bad.
