I need help picking out a book...?

Alright, I need to find a "biography, diary, collection of letters or memoir of recent vintage." It cannot be about/written by Wiesel, Roosevelt, or Frank. It can be written by an American, African, or Asian, but it must have a EUROPEAN focus. If you can suggest any SHORT books, or books that are thoroughly covered on Sparknotes, >=) I'd be very happy.

Note that I need to write a 3 page essay assessing the "voice" in the book after I "read" it, so if you have any suggestions on books that would make this task easier, be my guest.

  1. Mendel's Daughter: a Memoir by Martin Lemelman

With the characteristic phrasing of one who comes to English later in life, Gusta's is a gritty eyewitness report on the great upheaval of eastern Europe in the 1930s and '40s, based on Lemelman's recording of his mother in 1989; at the harshest moments, the reader can take a small bit of comfort that Gusta survived to live a long life in the U.S.A.

    Bait by David Albahari

Written in one very long paragraph, Albahari’s novel-memoir recalls his life in the former Yugoslavia, the death of his mother, and his exile to Canada. His mother, who converted to Judaism just before World War II despite the threat of Hitler, lived through two marriages and the war.

  2. try Newes From The Dead by Mary Hooper.

The true story of Anne Green, who was hanged til death and came back to life after having no pulse for three hours. She was actually innocent, but a man with power had too much say in her trial. Ironically, the day after she is concious, he dies.

It is a really good read.

    Hope I helped! :)

    EDIT:

    1. The title is not spelled news, but NEWES.

    2. In the back of the book is the actual news report done in 1650 about how God had a hand in this.

You can write about the contraversy and how he might have.
