  1. Where are you from?  See, I'm from Hawaii, so I would pick something Hawaiian to give them...  Often a good choice (for adults) is a book about where you live...  Usually somewhat touristy, but you can still get some really nice ones!  I'm not sure what to get for kids...  I'd suggest some sort of Candy or something for them to try, but American stuff is ALL OVER...  It's a lot eaiser the other way around!

Anyway, hope that gets you started.

  2. A great idea is a picture book of where you are from! English isn't required and they are quite beautiful. A cook book is a nice idea (but take an American measuring cup with you too!). For the kids, an American Monopoly game is fun. It's played all over the world, so they will know the rules, but each country has a different board and tokens. It's a nice ice breaker to teach some basic language skills. If they are very young, try something like Candyland.

    Have fun on your exchange!

As an addition, not necessarily as a gift, take lots of pictures of your school, home, family, friends and town. It doesn't have to be a book, a CD would work, but your new Japanese friends and family will be curious and pictures are a great icebreaker too!
