  1. Hypothesis is an educated guess. You must take a stand on a situation.

    For example:

PROBLEM: Will my fish eat turtle food?

HYPOTHESIS: No, my fish will not eat turtle food.

There are 2 types of variables: independant and dependant.

An independant variable is what you are testing. Going back to our example: feeding the fish turtle food.

The dependant variable is the outcome. For example: no, my fish has gotten thinner and looks sickly from lack of food.

There is also the controlled variable, which, depending on how you were told to write up your lab report, you might or might not need. If you do, a controlled variable is anything that was kept constant durring the experiment.

CONTROLLED VARIABLES: Type of fish, type of food, ammount of food, type of food fed before the experiment, acidity of water in tank, ammount of water in tank, etc. (These are almost infinite and it is extremely hard if not impossible to control all of them.)

  2. do your own homework.

  3. A tentative explanation for an observation, phenomenon, or scientific problem that can be tested by further investigation

a variable is something that changes between two test groups.  Say they are trying to see if a new drug lowers cholesterol.  They will give one group of people the actual drug and the other group of people a sugar pill. This is the variable. Their hypothesis will be "Drug X lowers cholesterol".  Then after the study period they will test both groups for cholesterol and try to prove the hypothesis.  "after 3 months the people who took drug X had lower cholesterol than the people who didn't"

  4. hypothesis is like U hypo some think and then approve it

variable changeable thin;;  is like liquid be gas

  5. Think of it this way: when you say that 'something' will happen based on the rules and the way things are that's your hypothesis. The variable is something that you can change in a specific way to determine how that 'something' will happen.

Here's a simple example.  My 'hypothesis' is that if I put a pan of cake batter in the oven and make it hot the batter will turn into a baked cake in a certain amount of time. I can control the temperature in the oven, so that is my 'variable' (the rest of the oven stays the same). And sure enough, if I do that the batter does turn into a baked cake, and I find that it takes less time for that to happen as I use higher temperatures in the oven...I have proved my hypothesis by conducting several experiments in which I have used the variable to test my hypothesis.

It's a silly kind of explanation, but I think it will help you understand what 'hypothesis' and 'variable' mean.

  6. google is your friend!

  7. Your hypothesis is your guess as to what the outcome to your experience is going to be. It's an "educated guess" and starts out your paper.

Your variable is something that you add (heat, cold, water, etc).

You should have this info in your Science book or should've already been instructed on what these 2 things are....
