Does anyone know where on the internet I can find research that supports using the Wilson reading program for dyslexic children? My son's school is using SRA in his reading resource room and I've just heard that SRA may actually be counteractive to Wilson which is what he gets at tutoring. I need all of the evidence I can get if I'm going to convince his ignorant school of anything. They act like dyslexia is a dirty word.

  1. I have used the Wilson Reading System-I remember there being a description of who the system is appropriate for-

see if you can contact someone and get a copy of that page

    http://www.wilsonlanguage.com/w_about.ht...

I had the opposite problem-the school I was in insisted taht every studnet use teh Wilson sytem even if it went against their IEP and Wilson itself said it was inappropriate for the type of student (a public special education school)

  2. Your son's tutor might be the best resource for this type of information, as they are actually using the program with him.  I would talk to the tutor, explain the program they are using at school, and see what she says about it before doing anything else.  It may not even be true that SRA works counter to Wilson - where did you hear that?

  3. If your child is NOT getting services thru special education, the school can use whatever they want and you can't do a thing about it.

If you child IS recieveing sped services (IEP plan) schools are suppose to use programs that are 'scientifically researched based'.

I am a member of quite a few groups, boards, etc about special ed issues and thru them have learned that SRA is NOT for dyslexic children or for any OTHER learning problems.

Schools use this because it is the CHEAPEST, no matter if it helps the child or not.

You can contact SRA and get a copy of their program description.

Then compare this to what special ed law states that has to be used for children in special ed (IEP plan)

If SRA is NOT allowed by special ed law, then you can call an IEP meeting and take the written SRA info and also a copy of the special ed law that states it is not to be used

And request for a program to be used that complies with the special ed laws.

The laws that mandate special ed in schools is IDEA 'individuals with disabilties education act' and the best place for info on this is   www.wrightslaw.com

Here's a message board where you can get lots of help for this
