I need flour and vanilla and bread crumbs and things like that also.

It's going to cost a little money to do this, so I'm going to buy a little each time I go shopping. Which items should I buy first?

  1. Mrs. Dash is a great low sodium all purpose seasoning. Other necessities include salt (preferable sea salt), black pepper, onion and garlic powders, basil, cinnamon.

If you like seafood, lemon pepper and Old Bay seasoning are must haves.

For baking: baking powder, baking soda, yeast, vegetable shortening, vanilla extract.

For more exotic dishes: cumin, curry powder, nutmeg powder

  2. This might help you.

  3. Buy your spices but why not grow your own herbs. You can grow them in a window box or in pots and fresh herbs are better than dried.

  4. listed in order of importance:

    all purpose (plain) flour

    salt

    sugar, white & light brown

    black pepper

    seasoned salt

    garlic powder

    onion powder

    baking soda

    baking powder

    vanilla

    cinnamon

    dry thyme (not ground)

    seasoned bread crumbs

    choc. chips

nuts for baking (pecans or walnuts)

  5. The 2nd answer is pretty good, you should also have on hand things like rice, pasta (spaghetti or other noodles), bakers chocolate (not sweet chocolate) soy, Worcestershire sauce and liquid smoke.

What you need really is going to depend on what you like to eat and what (and how) you like to cook.

Meat tenderizer is useful, especially if you don't have the money to buy high-priced tender meat.

Pre-packaged gravy mixes are good to keep on-hand, because you can use them as thickening and flavoring agents as well as making gravy.

Keep in mind that there are lots of folks with allergies.  For example I am VERY allergic to capsaicin, the oil in hot peppers that makes them hot-so I can't use the hot pepper flakes, tobasco sauce, and so forth.

So you may have to adjust the lists we give you.

Thickeners, like flour, corn starch, and arrowroot work differently and give a defferent result.

Pick up a good, basic cookbook (any of the ones from Rachel Ray, or the Good Housekeeping one, or the one from Betty Crocker) and make a list of the most commonly listed items.

Good luck! enjoy your first foray into the wonderful world of cooking!
