i am going to be working in a horse camp this summer as a counselor. The girl putting on the camp has asked me to think of some thing to teach young kids. these kids are aged between 6-12 and range from COMPLETE beginners around horses to intermediate riders.

What we are teaching the kids have to be unmounted

you may use horses as props

and they should be about 30 minutes long

an example of one would be

Teach kids why you would use leg protection. Different kinds of leg protection.

If you need any more details let me know?

  1. Points of the horse,

    Colours,

    Good and Bad conformation,

Learn about different types of tack and bits (completions who can take a bridle apart clean it and put it back together fastest),

How to groom a horse (including how to pull mane and tail),

    How to bandage it correctly,

How to load a horse in to a box,

    Pasture maintenance,

    The importance of worming,

    Poisonous plants,

    Dietary needs of the horse,

recognising the signs of good/poor health (how to check for dehydration, signs of colic, founder...etc) and lameness,

    How to treat minor injuries.

Hope these have given you a good starting point.

    GOOD LUCK =)

  2. : )

I think it's great that you're doing this. I think for the somewhat older kids, you could teach them all the parts of the saddle, what they do, and what not.

You could show the little kids how to lead ponies/horses and be around them safely.

You could have a treasure hunt for all different types of riding gear & riding clothes (hide a helmet somewhere noticeable, hide a crop, etc.)

When you are using a horse as a prop, you can always go through normal safety, reminding them to NEVER walk behind a horse, walk beside the horse, and ground manners for the horse.

    Good luck!

  3. my mom ran a riding program and it went very well.

there are tons of things about horses that u might not get to, but here are some things.

1 - first teach them the history fo the horse. there natural habitats, lifestyle, diets, how they r prey animals, fight or flight, how they started with humans, ect. the breeds, health things.

2 - then i would move on to the body parts and conformation of horses. mayb a small common horse injurys or illnessses.

3 - next i would teach them the correct ways to approach hores, and the equipment they will need for protection.

4 - learn the brushes, how to safely groom, ect.

    - relaxing around horses and beoing comfortable together, and tell them the do's and donts of working on the ground with horses. like the safety rules.

then mayb lunging and ground work, ect. also how to correctly lead and handle horses. saddle, know the parts of the saddle, ect.

i would not start them riding for a long time tho.

im sure ther is more i missed but keep researching safe ways to teach the kids the basics of working with horses.

    good luck!!!!

ps - my mom every couple days made EVERY person there clean stalls. lol but they did a good job. its good to make it fun but still safe.

  4. How to groom horses like brushing, braiding tails, picking feet, etc

    How to lead a horse

    How to approach a horse

    How to clean stalls

How to feed and what they eat

How to act around horses; dont jusm around let the horse know where you are, where its safe to stand

how to do showmanship or halter class

How to check temp, heart rate, listening for stomach sounds(probably for older kids)

The body parts of the horse

you could make levels and each thing gets them to a higher level. It would be a good reward

  5. Kids who are COMPLETE beginners, teach them proper safety around a horse. The first lesson I teach any kid that comes near my horses is how to move around them and lead them safely.

I explain that the hindquarters are OFF LIMITS for approaching a horse, I explain the proper way to give a treat, I use treats to explain how horses can get pushy (by getting the horse to try to beg for treats to an extreme, pushing into your hands, etc, some of mine will do this to people they don't respect who they know have treats) and how to push the head away. I teach them that EVERY SINGLE TIME you walk around a horses hindquarters you put your hand on their bums, keep close to their hindquarters and talk to them. I explain how to pick up their feet with your body close to the horses.

This should always be the first lesson given to any kid.

I usually encorperate grooming with the first lesson of how to work around the horse. The kids I teach get one lesson with the horse tied, then the rest of the time (after i teach how to halter, which would be another good idea) they catch their own horse. Since I usually just use my pony, and he's a lover boy and perfect size for 6 year olds. :)

Good luck, safety first! Then grooming, I'd say. Ranging slowly up to wrapping legs, proper trailering, proper tacking, proper tack fitting..

Basically, think about all the things YOU have to do. In the beginning, be safe around the horse, grooming, tacking, then advance to other horse care. :).

    Good luck.

  6. For the intermediate ones you can work on lead changes. As

for the begginers... to groom the horses and some natural

horsemanship. Teach them how to tack up a horse, roll of

polo wraps and wrap them on a horses legs, how to plait a

horses mane, how to lead and tie a horse correctly, proper

feeding for horses, etc. Good Luck!

  7. you can teach them SO many things!

    Breeds or thehorses

    the parts of a horse

Teach them to read horse language

what horses can eat and what is bad for them

teach them some bascis sicknesses and showthem how to cure it

umm i guess thats all for the begginers

but teach them basic horse handleing, shooing, tacking, and riding!

    have fun!!!
