  1. the 7:58 could be a good score depending on your weight ect, your level of exaustion after, i knew guys who went 8:20 and then the next one went sub 7 within a couple weeks there are alot of factors contributing to it being a "good score" its subjective. In terms of numbers, no it wont be winning you any medals soon. The focus thing, you should focus on 1 thing at a time that your coach has mentioned and try and perfect it or try to ask your coach one thing you can work on. you can also just try and make your puddles as clean and big as possible this will allow your self to focus on that. and if you do loose focus, try and regain it and go from there rather then worry about loosing focus

  2. You'll need to stop some of the things you zone out to, or at least stay "in the moment" by focusing on the stroke's oar, and the slide and body motion of the person in front of you.

You to look like you are mechanically connected, and become that smooth.

Focus on perfect vertical hand lift, splashless oar entry and exit to the water, level hand movement, no body weave (unless the coach wants that).  Long smooth stroke.  Every stroke is history, and has nothing to do but be a memory model for the next stroke.   Breathe deeper, fewer times, you'll get more oxygen, and row more powerfully
