I am an adult and i really really want to learn how to ride a bike. I have tried once on my roommates nice bike, and once on my parents old bike from the 80s. I weigh 200+ pounds and I have some balance. ..

I am looking for a bike to help my learn to ride as an adult, and i am not really sure what i am looking for?

how high should the seat be? what kind of bike should i get? training wheels for adults? do they work?

any certain techniques?

  1. Best to get to a bike shop.  They have very knowledgeable people to put you in the right fit for the type of riding you wish to do.  Steer clear of department stores, etc. that sell bicycles.  The extra money you pay at an exclusive bike shop that caters to pros, racers, enthusiast, etc. will be worth it.

  2. Take it slow.

And keep practicing. Its not that hard.

  3. I thing that best way is to get somebody with tandem bicycle , you need just 2 - 3 hours riding to be ready to buy your own bicycle .

  4. go to a bike store..that is just for bikes tell them what you need and they will help you with the  seats and hight and stuff like that...good luck!!! keep practicing and you will get it!!

  5. Bicycles are less about balance than they are about speed.  The rotating wheels provide a force that keeps you upright.  You need to make sure you don't slow down too much.  Check out my answer to another fellow adult learner:

At first, riding a bike appears to take great balance. It really doesn't. The rotation of the wheels provides a force that keeps the bicycle vertical. The faster the wheels rotate, the greater this force becomes. Once you get the bicycle moving, staying vertical is easy, until you slow down to stop.

I would first practice on a good stationary bike. Get the feel for moving the pedals. Practice mounting and dismounting a stationary bicycle (check out the video on the site below for the proper technique).

The key to not falling over when you start riding is to give one pedal a good push. This will allow you to use it as a step stool to get on your seat as well as getting the bike off to a quick start. When you slow down, stand up on the pedals and get ready to put a foot on the ground.

For your first couple times, it might help to keep the seat lower than you need it for going long distances.

  6. Well i'm a kid and i used to let my mom pull my bike while I turned the pedals..........And then I learned how do it myself without her help....To stop the bike, u shuld either put ur feet down or turn the pedals backwards. I don't really recommend training wheels.......I hope my advice has been helpful and Good luck!
