Two events A and B are defined on a sample space such that P(A)=0.3, P(B)=0.2, P(A intersection B)=0.1. what is the probability that exactly one of the two events occur?

  1. You only want the probability of either A or B, therefore you have to subtract the probability of the intersection of these two events from the individual events.  P(A) = .3, but .1 is when it intersects P(B).

    {P(A) - P (A int B)} + {P(B) - P (A int B)} = your answer

    ( .3 - .1 ) + ( .2 - .1 ) = .3
