I'm part Navajo Indian and I was studying our origins to see what we are, I am doing this research with some other Navajo people, and I came across this in the process, what does this mean? Does this mean we are Asian?

Classification

According to Ethnologist and Linguist, the Navajos are classified scientifically as follows,

Primary Race : Mongoloid (Asian) or

Xanthochroid

(Homo Sapiens Asiaticus)

Secondary Race : American Indian

Ensemble : Na-Dené

Branch : Athabascan-Eyak

Family : Athabascan

Group : Athabascan

Sub-Group : Apachean

Unit : Navajo-Apache

Sub-Unit : Western Apache

Tribe : Navajo (Diné)

The two who answered before don't have to answer, I'm counting you as well.

  1. It means that you are related to current Asians which are classified as Mongolian by this researcher.  Races are somewhat subjective. Asian is a common term for Mongolian. You are obviously American Indian.

  2. All Native American ancestor humans entered the continent over the Bering Strait about 15,000 years ago (it was dry then). So, yes, you are genetically Mongol (probably only partly if any of your ancestors interbred since with the white folks).

  3. Wow this is an interesting and noble project; Are you researching the models of migration to the New World? Just to clarify I'm no researcher or expert in this field but I feel that I should give my two cents worth after reading the article below from Wikipedia. I'm a Southeast Asian Chinese BTW 8)

Clearly by observation (when I was touring), its true that SE_Asian and East Asian (or North Asian whichever you prefer to call) differ by features and built although the countless generations of intermarriages have diffused most of these already. The number of ethic groups in China alone identified alone is 56 currently.

The main difference between East Asian people(mainly northern part of China) and SE_Asian countries (I would include people from southern part of China here if you want to do extensive studies) is that the former generally have bigger built and the Mongoloids features that Western studies always refer to originates from. Fact is only one third of China population has that unique single eyelid.

I'm not sure if what Wikipedia mention is correct but as far as facial feature-wise, I think Red Indians (is that right?) resemble more like SE Asian. Okay I only saw on TV documentaries so can't gauge that accurately. But I heard from my brother who used to study in the States and my mum who went to visit him that they too were surprised by how much similarities apart from the native clothes that they saw a family wearing.

I hope one day you can solve the mystery link of your heritage. Race is merely a classification as a reference guide to me. Maybe some day there will be truly racial and religious harmony. Cheers!

  4. You are descended from white shell woman. She had two children. They made everthing people need. There are many schools of thought about anthropology and ONE way to check the progress of a culture across land and time is based on Glotteral drift( how language changes). Some anthropologists think that you came across the land bridge from asia, that is why they classify American Indians as Mongoloid race. This is based on language drift, similar lifeways, similar creation stories, similar implementation of technology, etc. However chromosomal evidence may say otherwise because almost all Asians are blood type A+ and almost all American Indians are o+. The Athabascans First People in Canada speak a similar language to you and have similar DNA, you have cousins at San Carlos, Whiteriver, etc., their grand parents were hunter gatherers that led a slightly different lifeway than your grandparents (semi nomadic). If you choose to believe the anthorpologists, that breakdown may be a way that they catogorize your path over the meillenia, or you might believe that you entered this last world very close to where you live now by crawling up a reed through the navel of the world. May beauty, truth, goodness and health surround you.

  5. You are Native American.

The ancestors of Native Americans, as stated, initially entered North America by crossing the Bering Strait from Asia. So, some your ancestors were from the Asian continent. As a result, pre-contact Native American populations were more genetically close to those in Asia than those in, say, Europe (though if you go back in time far enough, we are all descended from people in Africa). For example, Native American mtDNA haplotypes are all those of Asian origins. That's what this chart is referring to (the genetic closeness).

But don't start referring to yourself as Asian:) You are Native American.
