I am researching the history of my surname, Poyner. The earliest mention is Geoffrey le Poinnur de panfeld in Essex in the year 1220.

The latin phrase from the Curia Regis rolls is as follows:

Gaudfridus le Poinnur de Panfeld, appellatus de roberia et latrocinio

per Willelum Smalwud, subtraxit se et non potest inveniri. Et ideo interrogetu et utlagetur in comitatu. Preceptum est vicecomiti, et quod inquirat de catallis ejus et si fuit in decenna.

  1. Gaudfridus le Poinnur de Panfeld accused of robbery and brigandage by Willelum Smalwud has escaped and cannot be found. And therefore is wanted and outlawed in the county. And the sheriff is ordered to find his cattle and if he was in the tithing.

  2. "latrocinio" : probably from "latrocinium" : 'highway robbery', 'violent robbery', 'mercenary service'

"in decenna" : "in dozin", refers to the 'Combinations of ten men, all of whom pledge the good conduct of themselves and their fellows; method of social control imposed on all Saxons after the conquest'

  3. That's in Medieval Latin, and there are some words there I'm not familiar with and can't find in my dictionaries, but the gist of it is:

Geoffrey le Poinnur of Panfield, named a thief and a ? by William Smallwood, fled and cannot be found. And therefore he was indicted  and outlawed by the court. It was orderd to the sheriff that he investigate his (Geoffrey's) chattel (tangible property) and [Can't make out the last part].

  4. Courtroll Latin is a peculiar mixture of Latin and English which is often near-impossible to decipher.

Rosa L has got most of this.
