  1. Using english is difficult to explain without actually showing you in person. There are a lot of great books , videos and websites that cover the subject though. You can find them all over the internet. Try this site for starters. They have some really good explinations of using english.

  2. I suggest you purchase and read "Standard Book of Pool and Billiards" by Robert Byrne. It is written and has illustrations for all pool players, novice to seasoned player, and you will never grow tired of referencing the pages.

I also suggest you go to your local pool hall and ask who the best player there is there. Whoever he or she is, they will be glad to help you out. While they might seem arrogant and above everyone else, a good pool player always loves a captive audience.

Finally, go to this link and contact the league operator. They will be able to help you with finding someone that can help you and find you a team to play on. http://www.poolplayers.com/Locator/defau...

  3. Without actually being able to show you i can explain some basic tips.

    1) Draw shots: Aim about 1 and 1/2  Tip down from center Cue. Stay as level as you can to the table. Open or close bridge (doesn't matter). and the most important is FOLLOW THROUGH. Once you make contact with the cue follow with the tip about 6-12 inches. This should draw back pretty easily.

    2) Follow Shot: Aim about 1 and half tip up from center. Again stay level with the table. Close bridge will reduce miscue. and once again Follow through. the longer the follow through with your tip the further the cue will roll down table.still recommend about 3 inch follow through will be a slight roll down table. a 12 inch follow could cause a scratch on straight shots no matter the distance.

    3) the stronger you hit will effect distance of each shot, the harder you hit the stronger the English will take effect. i.e doing a draw shot and you hit with medium strength will draw roughly 4 + inches.

Try this and practice with each. Your medium strength might be different then mine. Also for starters try line up aiming object ball in the side pocket and try to scratch in the opposite side on draw. once you get the try to follow into the pocket.

  4. There's a lot to English, but a quick simple explanation is, that where you hit the cue ball with the cue, is the direction of travel of the cue ball after impact, very obvious on a straight shot.  You hit on top, it will follow the ball, on bottom it comes back, left it goes left, right it goes right.  When striking an object ball at an angle, it can have slightly different effects, and it can impart a spin onto the object ball, a key thing to know when banking a ball.  I'd recommend the Rempe training cue to help you learn how exactly to use it.
