I have an old external floppy drive (yes from back in the day) and i have 2 floppy disks that go with it. I just bought a new laptop so i plugged in the external floppy drive so i can open the documents that are on my floppy disks. However, when i click to open it under "my computer" it first tells me to format my disks before opening them. i dont want to format them because i want those documents that are on the floppy. what do i do? is there any other way around this?

  1. either your floppys are bad and data cant be read by the computer, or whatever file system you are using on your current computer is not compatable with the file system you used all those years ago when you saved the files to disk.

  2. Exactly what dinoflop said.... Floppies have always been unreliable for data storage... and u should have probably known that...

The data can't be read either because the drives are corrupted... or else, the Operating system u are using now is different from the one u were using on ur old system....

The only way out, Maybe, is put the floppies in a system that has same operating system as ur older one(maybe one of ur friends).... and if the floppy is read, u can then transfer the data to a CD or a USB and then to ur system...

    Good luck for That!!

  3. Hi you must be using Windows vista or Windows XP ...thats why it is asking for formating try to connect that floppy drive on windows 98 OS and transfer your files ...in technical language file format is different your floopy was formated on fat 16 or 32 and vista xp dont support that format
