  1. swing as fast as u can and don't throw the ball too high or too low

  2. Hit the ball with your palm.  If you hit it with your knuckles or your heel, it will not be illegal.  You will not have any control.  It may work short term, but you want your serve over and IN.

Start at the 3 meter line or 10 foot line if you prefer.  Concentrate on getting your toss in front of your right shoulder if you are right handed.  Make sure your left foot is forward slightly.  Hit the ball with your palm while your hand is flat and firm.  (After you keep working on this, you will be able to get your serve over and it will float and be hard to pass. Can you spell ACE?)  After you get 5 serves over from the 3 meter line, take 1 step back and serve.  If it goes over and in, take another step back.  If you miss, stay at that spot until you get it over and in.  Keep taking steps back until you get to the serving line.

Part of the problem in getting the serve over is technique.  The other part is mental.  (It looks like a huge distance over a huge net.)  If you think you can not get your serve over, you can not get your serve over.  You need some confidence in order to get your serve over.

I would recommend doing this drill every day until you are 100% comfortable with your serve from the backline.

    Good luck.

  3. punch the ball wif ur fist... tht should get it over!

  4. my coach taught us this way.. it might help!

have someone stand on a chair holding a sweatshirt or some type of long sleeve (holding it above your hitting hand) and then swing at it, hitting it harder and more accurate each time.

    it helped me with mine!

  5. try to throw the ball in front of you and hit hard enough to pass the net....aim to the middle of the other side of the court!!

  6. I'm so glad you're perservering, it is such a good skill to have! Here are some tips that might improve your technique:

    1. TAKE YOUR TIME

The official rule is that you have 8 seconds to perform your serve. This is actually an eternity. Rushing your serve will only s***w up your routine, and cause you to lose serve and lose the point! So wait for the whistle!

    2. CREATE A ROUTINE

Your routine is perhaps the most important aspect of your “pre-serve”.Decide how many bounces, slaps, etc. you will do before going into the serving motions. This will give you some familiarity and make your serve consistent.

This also includes knowing how far you are from the service line (“serves go over, feet don’t!”)

    3. CHOOSE YOUR VICTIM

Picking a target on the floor will keep you from serving “out”.

Avoid good back row players, such as the libero as your victim. Find a possible hole on the floor (ex. in the middle of a cup formation)

    4. THE TOSS

This is the most important aspect of the actual serve.

Bring the ball in both hands in front of your body.

Toss with both hands and do not toss between your legs!

    5. FANCY FOOTWORK

Stand so that your feet are about shoulder width apart, with your foot the same side as your hitting arm slightly ahead of the opposite foot. Check: Are your feet/body facing your victim? Are your feet far enough from the service line?

6.THE TOSS CONTINUEDThrow the ball about 4 feet to double your height. Toss straight up- too far ahead/behind will throw off your serve.

    7. CONTACTING THE BALL

    Lead with your elbow.

Make solid contact on the top of the ball.

Don’t poke the ball-put some muscle into it!

NEVER, EVER fist the ball. Cast your palm as open as possible for the most surface area.

While contacting the ball, step with the foot opposite your hitting arm.

    8. BODY MOVEMENTS

This will give you the most balance and propel your body.

Pull your non-hitting arm down, and let your hips twist when you hit the ball.

    9. FOLLOW THROUGH

After hitting the ball, snap your wrist.

This will give you the top spin you want to make your serve difficult to receive. Drag your foot -the same side as your hitting arm-because you cannot take 2 steps.

    Best of luck!

  7. Toss the ball up and draw your hitting hand back like a bow, you should be able to touch the tag on your shirt. bring it foward with good speed and strike the ball centered with an open hand (closed fisted is too difficult to control and is impractical). Throw hip rotation into that mix if that isn't enough power, cuz core strength is a vital backup.

  8. Dont hit it with your knuckles because if the reff catches you it will be an illegal serve so I suggest if u need to get it over harder lift weights to get more muscle then once u come to serve hit it with all u got or enough to get it over the net

The way I serve overhand it is hold it as if I were holding a bow and arrow

  9. you need to learn not to try to hit the ball hard...but to hit it fast (your arm speed is what gives the ball distance).....while most of serving doesnt need strength, it still helps to lift more weights and improve your arm strength (it will make serving easier)

  10. i cant give u a long answer like almost everyone else here, because this is how i learned to serve.

    1. high toss, about 1 foot from ur hand at its highest point

    2. as the ball starts to drop, wait until the ball can be hit in the lower palm of ur hand

    3. hit that ball like its the head of someone you absolutely hate

make sure you have a fast swing, it makes the ball go up higher.

    good luck ! <3

  11. you could do it 2 ways, holding the ball high then hitting it or throwing the ball up and hitting it. try and hit it with the bottom of your palm, or your tip fingers

  12. Don't hit the ball with the palm of your hand. B-c when I played Volleyball I hit it with the palm of my hand at the begging of the season and it never went over the net.

  13. whatever you do dont hit the ball with your fist or knuckles at all. for one its illegal and for two you can probly brake some fingers doing that if you do it wrong,  and its a bad habit.

i play volleyball and i am right handed so i hold the ball straight out infront of me with my left hand.  [ you should toss the ball up in the air not much more than your arm reaches in the air.

keep your eyes on the ball and take your hand and hit the ball with the palm of your hand hard.  keep your whole arm stiff while you are doing this. if its flimsy the ball will go pretty much no where.

you might be hitting the ball when it is too low. if you hit it to low than it will go into the net. if that is your problem than try hitting it a little higher in the air

  14. Breath easy and jump with power when swinging. If this does not help you take a few steps back and think of something or someone you are trying to hit on the other side of the net. Then swing. You may need to practice this method a few times. My coach use to tell me to take my anger out on the ball! Good luck.......

  15. well, mainly it takes time... it took me my whole summer to get mine. but i was makign stupid mistakes. be sure to be serving with the right foot- im right handed and serve with my left foot. and while your serving, be sure to throw the ball, step with your oppisite foot, then hit it. dont throw the ball behind of you- thats another big thing i messed up on. keep your eyes on the ball. and another big thing, even thoguh i hated it, at first dont try to get a hard-pounder-im-going-to-make you-cry-serve. control is what makes it all possible. so get your serve fully controlled, and then start putting power.repition is a big thing. memorize the steps.  ive had people compliment my serve because i do the exact same thing everytime, and its so controlled. i only didnt get it over twice last season. im really glad i taught myself it. im starting to get power and its looking great. good luck hun! :]

  16. Getting the overhand serve usually just takes time... practice throwing the ball right in front of you do not through it higher than about an arms length high and dont throw it behind your head focus on hitting the ball in the center of your hand any school volleyball coaches will tell you never to hit it with a closed fist once you've just practiced on the toss try hitting it dont forget to follow through getting over the net just takes time keep practicing follow through and you will get it!!!

  17. well, i'm no genious when it comes to volleyball, but in gym we learned that when you do an overhand serve, pretend you're giving the ball a highfive.  hope this helps!

  18. Hit the ball harder.

  19. A good high toss is a good place to begin... then you should swing fast and don't hit the ball with a fist. In other words, toss, step, hit.

  20. okay what ever you do dont hit the ball with you fist or knuckles because you cant really judge where the ball is gonna go. Remember to keep your hand as tight as possible and when you go to hit it follow through take a step into it so all your baody weight goes into it. Good luck.

  21. fold your fingers over at the 2nd knuckle and hit it with the top of your knuckles, this will increase speed and put a wicked spin on the ball making it harder to return

  22. make sure u toss the ball almost in front of you pretty high 2.  make sure it's not 2 low.  other peeps r saying don't hit it at the palm of your hand.  you want to.  i'm in volleyball.  then once you hit it higher in the air once you get the easy part down, start snapping your wrist to make it harder.  when ur a pro, you can start aiming.  remember 2 take it slow though.  if you start trying to snap and aim right away, it won't work.  take a step into your serve to.  it'll give you more oomph.  good luck!
