a) Describe i a few sentences the steps involved in findin an equation of the perpendicular bisector of a line segment.

b) write an equation of the perpendicular bisector of the segment joinin the points (7,0) and (1,8)

  1. a) First you need to find the midpoint of the line segment (you can use the midpoint formula for this) and the slope of the line segment. You can then find the equation of the perpendicular bisector by inputting the information you just found into the point-slope form (y – y1 = m(x – x1)).


  2. first find the slope between these 2 points: = 8-0/ 1-7 = 8/-6 = 4/-3

    the slope perpendicular to this is 3/4

    now find the bisector of the line, the point half way between the 2 points given.,

    (7+1)/2, 0+8/2

    (4,4) the new line goes through this point

    so x=4 y =4 m = 3/4

    use y=mx+b

    4 = 3/4* 4 +b

    4 = 3 +b

    1=b

    so the equation of the perpendicular bisector is y = 3x/4 +1
