I need help with B-2 Visa application?

I'm about to apply for a B-2 visa to go to florida for 6 months, i understand i've got to fill the form in online, book the appointment and pay the fee then go to the appointment.

I'm wondering:

what documents do i need to provide other than my passport and photo? (bearing in mind im 19, and most of the money i'll be spending will be getting paid into my bank account whilst im in america)

Does the credit/debit card i pay the fee on have to be my own or can my mum pay?

Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks

  1. First, the length of your stay will be determined by the CBP Officer at the port of entry.  Until you are actually given entry you will not know how long you will be given.  The maximum is 6 months but you can be given less, much less time.

You need to PROVE to the US consular officer who interviews you that you will return to your own country.  At age 19 and with no job at home and not enrolled in school at home it's my guess that you will be denied a visa.

Remember, at the interview they are looking for reasons to believe you will come home.

Also, this whole idea of making you PROVE you will go home is US law.  The law requires the consular officer to treat you as intending to stay and the law puts the burden of proof on you to show otherwise.

If you are still not sure call your local embassy.

  3. There could be no guarantee that a B-2 visa will be granted.

At the same time, as a citizen of UK, you don't need a visa to go to US for up to 3 months.

Almost every week I hear from people from UK (40-50 year old, with good jobs, businesses) that their B-2 visa applications were denied.

It might be easier for someone not to apply for a visa, but to travel on a visa waiver (up to 3 months). Please note that if your B2 visa application is denied, you will not be allowed to travel on a Visa Waiver anymore.

From what you told about your situation, it seems that you don't have strong ties to your home country and it's difficult for you to prove that you have no immigrant intent (it's possible, of course). Why do you go for 6 months? What do you plan to do in US for 6 months while not employed? Do you have money to support yourself?

As an evidence, people use: documents showing property ownership in your home country; letters from employers or from school; bank acct statements; marriage certificate; long-term apartment lease; etc.

You wrote "most of the money i'll be spending will be getting paid into my bank account whilst im in america".

Do you plan to work in Florida for 6 months? As a Visitor, you are not allowed to work in US.

  4. You need to be able to prove ties to the UK. You say your job contract will be on zero hours till you get back. Ask your employer for a letter to state this and to state a date when you have to be back at work. That way you can prove you have a job to come back to. You may also need to show where you will get money to support yourself while you are here, if money is to be paid into your bank account you will need to be able to show that. Suppose your parents plan to support you you might be able to show a copy of a standing order from their bank to yours. You still live with your parents so you may not be able to prove you have a home to return to in the UK. Normally people prove this with a copy of their lease agreement or mortgage agreement. If your parents rent maybe they could add you to the lease, if they own the home they might be able to give you a letter to say you will be living with them again on your return home.

If you get your visa it doesn't guarantee that the immigration officer will let you into the country or that you will be allowed to stay for 6 months. The visa only allows you to present yourself at the border and ask for admission, the final decision is made by the immigration officer you meet when you get off the plane. You will need to bring the same proofs you showed at the Embassy as well as have a return ticket to go home at the end of your planned trip. If you are only allowed a shorter stay you will have to pay for another ticket home.
