Currently there is a trend to move to a 3 domain system of classification. Describe how this system is different from the traditional one.

I need help with this question, it's for my AP Bio Summer's Hw. It is also my last question so I am assuming it's the hardest.

Note: Carl Woese is a professor who is prominent in this movement.

  1. The 2 domain system includes domains prokaryota (aka monera) and eukaryota. Prokaryotes are organisms that do not have a nucleus or organelles in their cells, and eukaryotic cells do have nuclei and organelles. The 3 domain system of classification consists of archaea, bacteria, and eukaryota. Archaea consists of organisms that can live in extreme conditions, such as extremely hot or cold temperatures.

  2. Heres the wiki page for his 3 domain system. I can't spot a trend but hope this helps.
