  1. HOW ABOUT I GIVE YOU THE ANSWER!!!!!! Many believe that in fact there were two Great Awakenings.  That being said, when the pilgrims came here, many believed that it was started by Anglican groups when in fact this is not true at all.  Depending on where you arrived, various groups formed certain sects.  Those who had more power were part of the Anglican Church and what they wanted was to control the people by asking for money in various ways and not ask for the the participation of the community in the mass.  When things needed to be done it was only done by those in higher ranking in the community.  What continued was something called the "sacralizing of the land," which meant building churches showing that they now held more control.  Many years passed and various groups began showing resentment towards this immense power which the Anglican were trying to gather.  Out of this many people surfaced who wanted to create their own following.  Baptists, Mormons, and others grew out and this is what is called as the awakening.  Many of these leaders would go out and preach on top of hills, on the street, and even in people's gatherings and this was soon turned into the new method of hearing the "word of the lord."  Soon, this became a business.  How you might ask?  Well some of these preachers were so captivating that they were wanted all over the colonies - mostly in the north to begin with, then it moved south - and the only method in which to spread this information was by providing it to the people in form of the newspapers.  Some people such as Benjamin Franklin made good money like this since he owned a printer shop.  As time passed, more and more people were relying on these preachers for the good word because they claimed that anyone, not just the elite - which is what the Anglicans believed in - can form part of the celebration.  The elite Anglicans had reached such high status that they controlled the politics of the land by controlling the politicians.  On the other hand, the number of followers of the new religions were growing and recognized that now they wanted to have a say on politics, not just the Anglican elite.  This is what forces people to intensely push for a separation of church and state in America.  Hope it helped.
