  1. the nike miler xc from eastbay are great!!  Not only are they an elite racing shoe, but they have a small price tag of $39.99 considering the fact most are $60+

  2. Spikes should be very comfortable.  If not your spikes don't fit.  There are lot's of good brands.  I like Asics, Mizuno, Brooks.  The most important thing is to try the spikes.  Spikes are cut very tight.  Either they fit or they will pinch your feet.  Often you need to buy a half a size larger than your training shoe.

There are cross country specific spikes and then track/cross country spikes.  The former are slightly more rugged and water resistant for muddy cross country courses but a little heavier.  The latter can be used for both cross country and track and are a little lighter.  For cross country you need 9mm or 3/8'' spikes.  Track spikes uses 6mm or 1/4" spikes.

  3. in my opinion spikes are more comfortable than normal trainers, but that is just me. my xc spikes are saucony kilkennys, which are very good, in the past i have also worn nike rival xc spikes. it is really up to you. you should go to a running specialty store and try on many kinds and see which one works best for you.
