they currently have a 2-3 zone def and they are getting killed. when is the best time to run that type of def.?our jv team is not that good bc we do not have the best talent, it is a school for learning disabilities so we do not have the next lebron. the team has a C and a PF, and nothing else. the PG always commits turnovers and the big guys never get the ball. we have np shooters on the team.and pn;y 9 kids on the team. can i get advice on how to make them a better team? thanks, I am not the coach but mentor for one of the kids, (the PF).

I want to suggest that they apply fullcourt press and play man to man def. and switch the sg to pg hoping he commits less TO.

advice?

  1. It's funny that you put this into the home schooling area.

Basketball doesn't have to have genius-level players to be successful, so don't worry about the learning disability bent to this.

On defense, man to man is a good idea for a team that has little discipline or little court awareness, because the role of each player is clearly set (ie, "cover that guy").  Fullcourt press requires more discipline, otherwise, you'll get clobbered.

It really just sounds like the players need time to develop teamwork and time to develop skills.  The PG needs to work on ball control and good passing.  If the C is not getting the ball, then you should design some work with him designed more as a PF until your teams developed a stronger skill set.

    Good luck.
