I am crocheting out of a book called63 easy-to-crochet pattern stitches. The pattern I am doing is number 9 called the arch stitch. for the first at the very end it says 5 ch-2 sps. What does that mean.

In the second row it says 5 dc in next ch-2 sps.

In the 4th row it says ch 3, turn; skip first dc, dc in next 3 dc.

I am a beginner but this looks cool and i wanted to try it. Thanks for all the answers.

  1. I don't have that book, but...

Rrow 1: 5 ch-2 spaces at the end of an round or row, usually refers to the total number of ch-2 spaces done in that row or round.

Row 2"  '5 dc in next ch-2 spaces' means make 5 dc stitches anchored in one of the ch-2 spaces made in row 1 (see above)

Row 4: 'ch 3 turn, skip first dc, dc in next 3 dc. Means, you are at the end of a row. Chain 3 is the beginning edge of the next row. Turn your work around and work the other side and direction

Skip the first dc because that will duplicate the ch-3 you just made, and cause the project to grow wider. (not good)

'dc in next 3 dc' means just that. Make dc stitches in row 4 anchored in the next 3 dc in row 3.

It's obvious from your confusion that you are a beginner. Get yourself a copy of 'Crocheting for Dummies'. Its availalble now at most bookstores, Barnes and Noble for sure, and even Walmart. For about $15 it will clear up a lot of your confusion. AND find yourself a crocheting buddy. I had Granny Pooh 50 years ago.

  2. It means to do chain 2 single crochet or whatever it says in the next stitch and do this 5 times. You will have 5 chain 2 spaces.

2nd row - do 5 double crochet in the next stitch and 5 double crochet in the next stitch. You will have 2- stitches with 5 double crochets.

4th row- chain 3 and turn - double in the next stitch. The only time in crochet that you go into the 1st stitch is when doing single crochet. Any other stitches you skip the 1st stitch or else you will be adding a stitch.

I hope I helped. If not you can e-mail me.

  3. from what you have typed here it would seem that on row 1 you worked 5 lots of chain 2 spaces which now shows up as 5 small gaps along the row.

Row 2 - work 5dc into the next chain 2 spaces. presumably this will create the arches you refer to.

you missed what the 3rd row said

row 4 - the chain 3 and turn is for starting  the next row, then do not work in the first dc and work a 1dc into each of the next 3dc

    hope this helps
