I need help with a math problem!!!!?

Question

ok the directions say:

Evaluate the expression y (divided by) 3/4 for each value of y.

then the problems are:

1.) y= -9/16

2.) y = -2 1/4

3.) y = 7/8

4.) y= -5

i dont get it. can anybody give the answers to me and explain them please? thanks

1. -9/16 / 3/4 => -9/16 * 4/3

that's how you do division with fractions. division becomes multiplication while the second term becomes the reciprocal (the numerator becomes the denominator and the denominator becomes the numerator)

simplifying it, we have -3/4 (canceling 9 and 3 gives us 3 in the numerator while canceling 16 and 4 gives us 4 in the denominator)

2. -2 1/4 => -9/4 (multiply the denominator and the whole number then add the numerator. the answer becomes the numerator of the improper fraction. the denominator stays the same)

-9/4 * 4/3 = -3 (4 in the numerator and denominator cancels out while we are left with a 3 in the numerator since 9/3 = 3)

3. 7/8 * 4/3 = 7/6 (4 and 8 cancels out to give 2 in the denominator. since 3 and 7 are not multiples of the other, we leave it as it is with 3 in the denominator. 3 * 2 = 6 for the denominator)

4. -5 * 4/3 = -20/3 (-5 is also -5/1)

Mostly this involves multiplying the reciprocal (when dividing fractions):

1) -9/16[dividedby]3/4 = -9/16 x 4/3 = -9x4/16x3 = -144/12 = -12

2) a) -2 1/4 = -(8/4+1/4) = -9/4

2) b) -9/4[dividedby]3/4 = -9/4 x 4/3 = -36/12 = -3

3) 7/8[divededby] 3/4 = 7/8x4/3 = 28/24 = 7/6 (or 1&1/6)

4) -5[dividedby]3/4 = -5/1[dividedby]3/4 = -5/1 x 4/3 = -20/3 (or 6&2/3)

1)     okay so since you are dividing 2 fractions you take the second fraction and flip it so the new problem is

        -9/16 times 4/3 = -36/48 and then you probably want to simplify so the last and final answer would be - 2/4

2) -2 1/4 times 4/3 so -9/4 times 4/3 = -36/12 = -3

3) 7/8 times 4/3 = 28/24 = 14/12 = 7/6

4) -5/1 times 4/3 = -20/3

You would replace Y with those four values that you provided. 3/4 is the same as .75  I like dealing with decimals. Use a calculator to convert these fractions. For number 1.)  -9/16= -5625 so -5625/.75=.75 so number one is .75 or 3/4.  For number 2) -2.25/.75=-3 number 4) dont convert to decimals on this one because the answer is a repeating decimal. You must INVERT MULTIPLY, which means when you divide a fraction by another fraction, you FLIP the denominator (bottom part) and then mutliply through. 7/8 (on top) / 3/4 (bottom) changes into 7/8 times 4/3. mult top first which is 7 times 4= 28, then 8 times 3=24 so now you simply have 28/24. then REDUCE to get 7/6. Number 4.) -5/1 times 4/3 = -20/3 thats a messy number. I hope you understand the invery multiplying part of it- most important.
