I need help with a wallpaper issue!!! PLEASE!!!!

ok so i am taking down the horrible wallpaper in the house that i just bought. i borrowed my friends steamer......(oh, and i have NEVER done this before) anyway so it started coming right off.....problem.....it looks like hard cardboard under there..........it doesn't seem normal.....so someone told me that it was the drywall..........did i damage it?? it doesnt look ok to paint over?? tell me what the deal is and what to do please!! thanks!!!

Looks to me like it's the paper backing of the wall paper. This will come off with additional work.  Try spraying it with fabric softener and hot water, then scrape with a sraper.  If that works, you're fine, and haven't damaged anything.  If it doesn't, then you've got a problem.

And, yes, it's got to come off, too.
